October bites with frosty breath, The kind that chills you half to death. Leaves keep falling, calves still bawl, A cowboy works through it all.

Sun comes slow, the mornings gray, Saddles creak at break of day. Ropes are burned and hands get sore, Winter’s knocking at the door.

Diesel rattles, iron groans, Backs are aching, muscles moan. Fog hangs heavy, pastures wide, Still the herd’s got to be tied.

By night the fire, whiskey’s near, Boots kicked off, the sky is clear. October’s harsh, but it feels right A cowboy earns his rest tonight.

I didn’t want to leave the ranch… and halfway through our camping trip I just wanted to go back… But then the lake gave us a sunset like firelight, and the quiet mornings with coffee and a good book wrapped me up like a prayer.
